As healthcare moves toward more value-based payment models and the CQO Movement evolves, the need for a clearer definition of Clinical Integration is emerging. This session will address key stakeholders, managing “new” data, and a better way to engage physicians in supply chain and value-based payment models to more fully achieve Clinical Integration.

Michael Schiller, CMRP is Senior Director of Supply Chain for the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM), a professional membership group of the American Hospital Association (AHA). As the organization’s subject matter expert he brings 30 years of healthcare supply chain experience to his role.  In this capacity, Schiller collaborates with industry leaders across the healthcare ecosystem on various healthcare, supply chain, and advocacy initiatives as well as works with AHA and AHRMM executive leadership on the development of the association’s strategic direction and initiatives including the Cost, Quality, and Outcomes Movement, the Clinically Integrated Supply Chain, and the Learning UDI Community.

AHVAP is proud to congratulate Dee Donatelli, RN, CMRP, FAHRMM, CVAHP, member and Past President on her election to the office of chair-elect of the 2019 AHRMM Board. Dee’s clinical background, coupled with her extensive experience in supply chain, has provided her with a unique understanding of the symbiotic relationship of healthcare value analysis and supply chain in delivering quality patient outcomes and economic value. During her term as President of AHVAP, Dee led the initiative to establish professional certification for Healthcare Value Analysis, CVAHP, and continues to promote the profession within the healthcare industry.

AHVAP has collaborated with AHRMM for the past several years to educate their members on the role of Healthcare Value Analysis. We look forward to continuing to work with our supply chain peers to further our mission and vision: To provide and promote processes and information to assist Value Analysis Professionals in evaluating healthcare services for clinical quality and cost effectiveness; to be recognized nationally as the preeminent clinical resource in providing education, resources and networking to its membership and promoting Value Analysis in the healthcare community.

AHVAP Members Making a Splash

Laura Polson Presents to the Healthcare Manufacturing Management Council on Value Analysis and serves on

Laura Polson, BSN, RN-BC, CVAHP, System Services Director, Clinical Quality Value Analysis
Baptist Healthcare KY IN was the Keynote Speaker at the 2018 Spring Manufacturers Executive Conference held May 9-11 in Louisville, KY.  Laura’s presentation “Value Analysis 101- How to be Prepared and effective when working with the Value Analysis Team” learn more about the the Healthcare Manufacturing Management Council at .

Laura is also active in the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC ). MDIC is the first-ever public-private partnership (PPP) created with the sole objective of advancing medical device regulatory science.

They are a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that operates in partnership with the FDA to improve the medical technology environment. Participation in MDIC is open to representatives of organizations that are substantially involved in medical and/or medical device research, development, treatment, or education; that are involved in the promotion of public health; or that have expertise in regulatory science.  As a matter of fact two of our Regional Directors, Laura Polson, AHVAP Northeast Regional Director and Kimberly Hilliard, Central Regional Director are members of the Consortium. 

The Value Analysis knowledge and skills Laura employs in her role as System Services Director for Baptist Healthcare have proven valuable in her work on Product Quality Outcomes Analytics (PQOA).  We appreciate their service to AHVAP and their leadership in Healthcare Value Analysis. Chris Hannon Presents to the Healthcare Materials Management Society of New Jersey

2018 CVAHP Certification Renewal

AHVAP Members that received their certification in 2015 will soon receive notice for renewal.  Certification Renewal FAQs from the handbook, available on-line are:

• Term is 3 years

• Educational Credits required for renewal = 45 hours

• Applicant is required to submit a record of completion of 45 hours of educational credits related to the VA field and/or professional development. Qualifying educational credits must be awarded by a professional crediting body.

• Preparation and presentation of an educational session will be awarded 10 hours of educational credits for each one-hour presentation. Presentations must be at least one hour to be eligible for educational credits. Applicant is required to submit date, time, location and an outline of the presentation. Page 19

• Authoring or being a co-contributor to an article related to the role or skills required of a Value Analysis professional and published in a state or national professional publication will be awarded 5 educational credits for each article. Applicant is required to submit an e-link to the article or include a copy of the article.

• No more than 20 educational credits awarded for presentations or authoring of an article will apply to the total (45) educational credits required for renewal.

• Recertification Fee

o Member $150

o Non-Member $250

·         Click on the green plus sign to Add record of attendance at other educational offerings to be included.

Dee Donatelli added to Hall of Fame for Healthcare Supply Chain Leadership Board

Our Congratulations to member and Past President, Dee Donatelli , who has been appointed to the Bellwether League Inc. Hall of Fame for Healthcare Supply Chain Leadership.  The following is an excerpt from the article that appeared in the May 18th issue of HPN Daily.

Bellwether League Inc., the Hall of Fame for Healthcare Supply Chain Leadership welcomed a new executive to its Board of Directors that evaluate, validate and select professionals to be recognized and honored for their industry contributions, performance and vision, and two corporate sustaining sponsors at the highest level of support.

Dee Donatelli joins Bellwether League's Board to select Bellwether Class Honorees, Future Famers and Ammer-Level Supply Chain Organizations within the industry with a clear understanding of the Hall of Fame's impact on the profession and industry.

"Bellwether League's mission is to bring to light the efforts of influencers, innovators, pioneers and the risk takers that have helped and continue to mold the healthcare supply chain profession," Donatelli said. "There is no greater honor than to be recognized by your peers and designated a Bellwether.  The respect that Bellwether holds in the industry is the paramount recognition for professionals in supply chain.  The legacy Bellwethers leave in the healthcare field is worthy to record and to be recognized throughout generations to come."     

Donatelli currently serves as the principal of her own consulting practice that specializes in clinically integrating the supply chain among provider and supplier organizations. During her nearly 40-year career in healthcare operations as a nurse and supply chain executive, she focused on clinically integrated value analysis processes that involved physician collaboration using clinical evidence as the driver for effective cost management programs.

Prior to Dee Donatelli Consulting, LLC, Donatelli served as President and CEO of Mid-America Service Solutions, a Vizient Member Business Ventures network representing more than 250 acute care and 1,200 non-acute care facilities in a 10-state region. Her previous experience also includes supply chain consulting leadership roles in such organizations as Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Owens & Minor, VHA, Hayes Inc., Navigant Consulting and Vizient, as well as nursing and supply chain executive positions in hospitals.

Donatelli is a former president of the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP) where she helped to facilitate the creation of Value Analysis Certification. She also has been involved with the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management (AHRMM), serving at the state-level for Kansas and on the national board. She has held certifications with both national organizations as well as Fellow Status. She has also been an active Editorial Advisory Board and contributor to Healthcare Purchasing News.

Donatelli was inducted into the Bellwether Class of 2015.

"Having been inducted as a Bellwether in [October] 2015 was certainly a highlight in my career," she reflected. "The privilege to serve on the Bellwether Board is a great responsibility and one that I take very seriously.  The recording and recognition of key contributors in our field is something that is important and serves as a historical reminder of the dedication and accomplishment that individuals have made in healthcare's supply chain. 

"As we continue to honor individuals for their achievements we have a significant responsibility to continue to enhance the value of healthcare's supply chain," Donatelli continued. "I believe that those Bellwethers past and future have an ongoing responsibility to network and continue to drive change and innovation in our field. As a new BOD member I hope to influence professionals in our industry to continue to work to achieve better and more cost-effective outcomes for the patients we serve and the industry we love."  

Bellwether League Board Chairman Nick Gaich expressed his admiration and respect for Donatelli's Board position.

"I am pleased and honored to welcome Dee Donatelli as a member of the Bellwether League Board of Directors," said Board Chairman Nick Gaich. "As a Bellwether honoree herself, inducted in the class of 2015, Dee brings a legacy of lifetime contributions, passion and commitment to advance the Bellwether mission as the preeminent organization for recognizing Supply Chain excellence among healthcare leaders and organizations.

AHVAP Commitee Updates

Annual Conference Planning Committee
Co-Chairs: Susan Toomey and Wanda Lane

Our Conference Planning Committee is finalizing the speaker line-up and planning networking events.  Again this year, in addition to expanded educational opportunities including pre-conference offerings and a post-conference certification review session, there will be face to face meetings for each region, more opportunities to visit with the exhibitors, and fun networking events.

CVAHP (Certification) Committee
Chair: Shannon Candio

As we approach the renewal period for those who were first certified, committee members are focused on making the renewal process simple and convenient.  If you were were awarded a “Pioneer” certification, you will be receiving a renewal notice in a couple of months.

Educational Development Committee
Chair: Chris Hannon

The education committee will be submitting the application for Nursing CE’s for this year’s conference.  AHVAP will also recognize conference CE’s for renewal of CVAHP certification.  In collaboration with the Marketing Committee, we Chris will present a webinar on VA during Healthcare Value Analysis week and prepare brief talks to be available each day of the week.

Industry and Business Education Collaborative (IBEC)
Chairs: Barbara Strain and Gloria Graham

This Board-appointed committee assists with manages contracts AHVAP has with supplier representatives for the purpose of education.  We appreciate the time investment and support from these dedicated members.

Membership Committee
Chair: Susan Miller

The Committee is in the process of reviewing the annual member survey which tracks professional maturation of our AHVAP members. Results are reported at the annual conference during the business meeting.  Committee Members also follow up with members due to renew membership or whose membership may have laspsed.  They are committed to ensuring members are receiving a tangible value from their membership with AHVAP.

Marketing Committee
Chair: Jeffiny Shutts

The Marketing Committee promotes AHVAP and its activities on our website and on a variety of social sites. There have recently been review and revision to website navigation and development of industry contacts to promote AHVAP and Certification.  Committee Members have also been working on promotion of  celebration of Healthcare Value Analysis Week.

Past Presidents Committee
Chair: Sue Knapp

Committee members support AHVAP based on their lengthy association with the organization.  Throughout their years of service, they have been instrumental in molding AHVAP into the organization it has become today.  They are currently evaluating the opportunity to offer educational scholarships and capturing organizational practices in policies to strengthen the foundation of AHVAP. Committee Members continue to be active participants in Committees and in Leadership roles in the organization.

President's Corner

Dear Colleagues-Thank you for your continued work in value analysis and your continued membership in AHVAP.  As we approach summer, I wanted to share with you some things we, your board are working on.

Our strategic plan is in place and we are working on several goals.  The strategic plan is posted on the web site (  Please take some time to read it; it is our roadmap for the future.

Value Analysis week is quickly approaching.  July 16 – July 20, 2018.  You will be seeing a flurry of activity on our social media sites in advance of our chosen week.  I encourage you to recognize your value analysis teams and colleagues for their many contributions to healthcare.  #IAmValueAnalysis

The annual conference registration is open, as is hotel registration.  Our theme this year is Healthcare Value Analysis Evolution.  We have an exciting line up of speakers and presentations.  Come and learn and share your experiences, and use this opportunity to connect with colleagues.  Oh, and maybe take a walk along the beautiful beaches of Clearwater.  I encourage you to register early, and reserve your hotel rooms as soon as possible.  We also have a new conference app to keep us all connected. 

As our conference is aptly titled, healthcare is evolving, and value analysis is part of that evolution.  Our ability to influence healthcare product and practice decisions based on cost, quality and outcomes is influencing and changing healthcare.  Don’t be afraid of the change…embrace it!

Welcome Spring.  For many of our members, it’s been quite a long winter and we are happy to move into spring and then into summer. I’d like to share some important updates and information from the Board of Directors.

Management transition:
Our transition from Ewald to Capitol Hill Management is now complete.  We know there were some bumps in the road and we appreciate your patience as we worked thru the transition activities.

Strategic Plan:
Work was begun on a strategic plan last fall, prior to the start of the conference.  You may have been at the meeting where we introduced the topic and discussed the importance of having a plan or a guide for the organization.  I am happy to report that with the assistance of Meagan and Brian at Capitol Hill, the strategic plan has been completed and passed by the Board of Directors.  It will be posted on the web site and is available to review here - LINK.  A strategic plan is important as it guides the work of the board and keeps us moving in an organized fashion to meet the needs of the organization. The plan leads us thru 2020, and focuses on organizational activities this year, including leadership development and increasing AHVAP visibility; in 2019, the focus is on membership, and in 2020, projecting our organization into the national spotlight.  Please take a few minutes to review where we are going.

We are now live on a new platform for learning management.  When the CVAHP modules were created, they were intended to be presented in an interactive fashion, with video clips and question sessions, and allowed for the leaner to move along at their own pace.  When the platform was moved, some of the functionality was lost.  One of our members reached out to us for assistance with this and as a result, a new provider was identified, approved by the board, and the modules moved to the platform it was intended for.  This should significantly improve the usability of the modules and enhance learning for the certification candidates.

By Laws Amendment:
Members of the organization were asked to vote on an amendment to permit an affiliate level membership within the AHVAP organization, as well as further define the retiree role.  The amendment was overwhelmingly approved by the membership. A task force led by Sue Knapp, Immediate Past President has been created to work thru the operational issues and make recommendations to the board before we can launch the affiliate role.  When the operational issues have been addressed and approved by the board, a formal announcement outside of the organization will be made and affiliate members will be accepted into the organization. 

Work continues relative to operational goals, with focus on an organization that provides value to our members, supports education and sharing of knowledge, collaborates with other healthcare professionals, and provide a network of support for value analysis professionals across the country.
